The ship Shenghua-536 at the #202 berth in Huanghua Port recently completed the recycling of 7,000 tonnes of ballast water, marking that the port’s ballast water recycling work for 2023 had started one month ahead of schedule. It is estimated that the port will increase freshwater recycling by 140,000 cubic meters and save water costs by about 600,000 yuan.

Since the beginning of February, Huanghua Port has actively accelerated ballast water recycling. Through precise forecast of temperature changes and thorough preparations, it manages to grasp any opportunity for ballast water recycling. Leveraging China Energy’s strength in integrated operation and industrial coordination, the port coordinates freshwater resources for arriving vessels and enhances their water supply capacity. Based on the distribution of coal stockyard resources, it takes into account the shipping capacity of anchored vessels to formulate rational operation plans. In addition, it advances ship loading and ballast water recycling in a coordinated way and arranges vessel arrival and departure in a rational manner, constantly optimizing its water usage model. Recycled ballast water can be directly used in production, not only improving the port’s eco-environment but also reducing the cost of industrial water. By doing so, Huanghua Port has achieved great economic and ecological benefits.

Since 2017, Huanghua Port has innovated ballast water recycling methods. It has built an ecological water system comprised of “two lakes and three wetlands” that cover nearly 700,000 square meters in total. With the help of pipelines and pump stations, the system has achieved interconnection of water sources, water ponds, sewage systems, lake reservoirs, and terminal users. In terms of water usage strategy, it prioritizes using recycled ballast water, which accounts for 30 percent of all water used in the port. This effectively solves the problem of freshwater shortage and lays a solid foundation for high-quality development of the green, smart port.
