China’s First Dual-Power Intelligent Tamping Vehicle Entered Full Service on China Shenhua’s Self-Owned Railway Network

Recently, China’s first dual-power intelligent tamping vehicle, titled CHN Energy Endeavour, completed all works inside the Huojialiang Tunnel on the Shenmu-Shuozhou Line. This milestone marks the vehicle’s full deployment on China Shenhua’s self-owned railway network, bringing the company’s railway tunnel maintenance into a new phase featured high-end, intelligent, and green development.

The vehicle was jointly developed by China Shenhua’s Railway Equipment Company and CRCC High-Tech Equipment Corporation Limited, with initiative core technologies. Compared with traditional tamping vehicles, this model can flexibly switch between pure electric and hybrid modes, effectively improving the working environment, reducing energy consumption and emissions, and simultaneously enhancing the safety, quality, and efficiency of maintenance work. It offers a highly efficient and suitable solution for railway tunnel and special-section line maintenance.

Prior to official commissioning, the Railway Equipment Company has completed comprehensive offline debugging, multiple rounds of technical optimization and rectification, and full-scenario test runs outside tunnels. After repeated field tests and validation, the vehicle’s operational stability, line adaptability, and intelligent operation all met on-site requirements.

To ensure the safe, orderly, and efficient execution of this operation, the Railway Equipment Company adhered to the principles of “safety first, meticulous preparation, and full-process control.” Early planning and coordination were carried out across all departments, with joint efforts forming a dedicated support team. Given the complexities of the enclosed working environment in the Huojialiang Tunnel, the high level of professionalism required for operating new equipment, and the cumbersome multi-machine collaborative procedures, the company organized specific safety and technical briefings as well as pre-operation safety brainstorming sessions. All potential safety risks, including those related to tunnel operations and equipment handling, were comprehensively identified and addressed. A customized safety management plan, standardized equipment operating procedures, and emergency response protocols for unexpected situations were developed. Practical training on the new equipment, simulation drills, and hazard identification were conducted. In addition, preparations such as full vehicle inspection, power system debugging, and intelligent system calibration were completed, thereby establishing three robust lines of defense: operational safety, equipment reliability, and work quality.

This vehicle fills a technological gap in China’s domestic tunnel mechanized maintenance equipment sector and provides a replicable, scalable practical solution for the iterative upgrading of track maintenance equipment in the industry.
