China’s First High-power Hydrogen Energy Locomotive Completed its First 10,000-tonne Loading Test

On March 28, the second stage test of China’s first 2400kW high-power hydrogen energy shunting locomotive was conducted at Sidaoliu Station on Bazhun Line of Xinshuo Railway, towing 105 C80-type wagons for 165 minutes. Driven by hydrogen energy, this locomotive successfully ran two kilometers at a constant speed and consumed 40Kg hydrogen fuel, marking a significant breakthrough in the market-oriented application of high-power hydrogen energy power equipment for heavy-haul railways in China.

Modular, standardized and generalized design is adopted by this first high-power hydrogen energy shunting locomotive. In response to different traction application demands, different energy output strategies and a variety of power supply modes including hydrogen fuel power supply, lithium battery power supply, and hybrid power supply are implemented. Applicable to “electrified and non-electrified” lines, with wider environment adaptability, the locomotive can meet the operation requirements for intra-station shunting, short hauls, loop line loading, power plant pickup and delivery. With a design speed of 100Km/h, power at wheel rim up to 2400kW in a short time, and the maximum starting traction force of 560kN, the locomotive is geared to the maximum traction load of 10Kt on the straight road and 5Kt on the ascending ramp at slope gradient of 4‰. Balancing the long endurance and short-time high power needs of shunting locomotive, the locomotive boasts higher efficiency and more energy saving benefits.

With the success of the traction and loading test, the second stage test of China’s first high-power hydrogen energy shunting locomotive has been completed. This also marks a key milestone for heavy-haul railways on the fast track for green reform of production mode, and further helps high-power hydrogen energy locomotive leap from experiment to practical use in the field of heavy-haul railway, providing scientific and technological support for Chinese heavy-haul railway power equipment to shape new quality productive forces.
