Founded in 1995, Shenhua Group Corporation Limited is one of the key State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) directly overseen by the central government. As a super large coal-based integrated energy company and the world’s largest coal supplier, Shenhua Group is ranked 178th among the Fortune Global Top 500 Companies and 21st on the China Top 500 Enterprise list. As an energy research institute established under the auspices of the central government and managed by Shenhua Group, National Institute of Clean-and-Low-Carbon Energy (NICE) is a demonstration project to help transform the old R&D regime to a new one that features an enterprise-centred collaboration between business, academia and government. Its objective is to build a world class low carbon energy technology research institute with top-rank talents, facilities and environment. Its priorities include the recruitment of overseas top talents, basic research on the application of low carbon energy, development and integration of low carbon energy technologies, development strategy and technical roadmap for renewable energy.
NICE is committed to the development of technologies in the following fields: new approaches to coal conversion and modification; emission reduction of coal-fired plants and IGCC power plants; CO2 capture and storage (CCS) and CO2 enhanced oil recovery (EOR); renewable energy and chemical products; energy storage; synthetic natural gas (SNG); syngas to fuels and chemical products; direct coal liquefaction etc.
So far, NICE has made significant progresses in low-rank coal pyrolysis technology, FT synthesis catalyst, coal gasification, direct liquefaction residues utilization, coal to natural gas conversion, methanation catalyst and other fields. NICE has established partnership with 6 leading Chinese universities and research institutes such as Tsinghua University, China Academy of Science as well as 4 overseas enterprises and laboratories.
The goal of NICE is to develop a host of advanced technologies with independent IPRs within 2 - 3 years, build itself into a world-class research institute and become the “experimental field” and “demonstration base” of low carbon energy development in China and in the world as well within 5 - 10 years.
